MSD ignition
Has anyone here ever tried hooking an MSD ignition to one of these with the electronic pickup in the distributor? I have an old MSD 5 hanging around, and I am considering installing it in the Yugo. Better fuel burn from multiple sparks might do a lot for the popping exhaust.

Some of national Yugo racers drive MSD ignition coil, it gives about 1hp on the dyno as they say.

Not the coil, the module. I'm not after the horsepower so much as better combustion. I was going to put it on my '64 dodge, but I might put the 6A on it instead. The 5 is a factory replacement module not a performance module. I' m just not sure how to wire into the system. I could do it in my sleep if it was points or an HEI.

It is bit expencive for us. People here usually use factory ignitions, or MSD coils, Digiplex ignitions...etc.

A little reading says the 5 doesn't like magnetic pickups, so I might not be able to install it anyway. I almost want to install a point ignition just because of the expense of the modules used in the electronic distributor.

If I buy another, I'll probably go with the 6A or 6AL. I have had good results with them.

Yes, the module is more expensive than Yugo.

I gave $50 more for the car than I'd pay for the module I've seen a Yugo go for as much as $5000 for a pristine example.

This is really nice one. I would pay that money for a Yugo in that condition. Yugo is like any Fiat or Italian car...there are few things to know about it, and it will run forever:
Oil and oil filter change must be on time. If you have 5 speed gearbox, make sure that it has enough oil, because of fifth gear.
Wait for it to worm up before pressing the throttle down, never drive it cold.
Don't be harsh with gearbox, change the gears smooth, it clicks when it is in the gear, when gearbox is good, it should go into gear by itself, you only need to push it a little bit. If you can't find the gear, dont force it. Put it in neutral and easy, it will click. When changing gears, don't change from first to second, second to third...etc., gear change is going like this:
press the clutch, put it in first, relesse the clutch and go, when you are driving, press the clutch put it in neutral, go into second from neutral, relese the clutch...etc. It is the same while changing gears up and down. Never change from second to first while driving. You can change from second to first, when you stop the car. It would look like this. You want to change: From second put in neutral, or press the clutch, stop the car, and then put it in first from neutral. First gear is used only to get the car moving or to drive it very slowly, or to drive it on hillclimb road.
It is the same with old Fiat, old Alfa Romeo, old Ferrari...etc.
Yugo has Lampredi engine (Fiat 128 engine engineered by Aurelio Lampredi-Ferrari engine designer). Yugo has revy engine, it likes to be driven fast and high revs when it is on the work temperature. That's why, Yugo is so fun to drive (driving slow car fast ).

That's just it, very few people appreciate them. Even fewer remember them. I just think the car is pretty cool. It has a lot of good features. Before it's all done I may have to rebuild the engine. Hopefully not before I get some miles out of it. Oil looked very bad. It may get another change soon to be sure it is clean.

I think that you would make a lot of miles...only you need to do is to clean the engine and put new oil in it. It should go fine. Don't worry.

Has anyone tried Lucas in these?
Are you telling me these things want to be double clutched? I drive truck, so I know how to shift without the clutch. I would never try that in the Yugo because the stations are very loose on the shifter. Because of that, I am trying to be very gentle with the gearbox. Neutral and gear stations are almost indistinguishable from one another.

Not double cluched. But it has springs in gearbox that can be destroyed if you hardly go from speed to speed, and it makes gearbox wobble feeling. You just go from neutral into gear to be sure not to miss one, but if you are expirienced it might be ok-but this is thing to save the gearbox.
indistinguishable gears-might mean that someone hard shifted it so it doesn't click when you go into gear or into neutral.
Or check elastic rubber joint that goes from shifter to gearbox under the car.
